Many large global corporations have functions that require effective social media marketing. If you feel you have plenty of experience, I actually know of an opening at my current place. I work for the worldwide leader of beauty and fragrance products – L’Oreal.
Let me know if you’re looking and maybe you can send over your resume.

Is Social Media a good major to consider in today’s technical world of communications?
I’m a Public Affairs Specialist in the army national guard, and a few of my instructors at my army school (DINFOS @ ft Meade) told us that Social Media consultants are making good money at the moment. WE have youtube, facebook, etc…however, in the past decade, more corporations and small businesses have quickly realized what an asset that internet social venues can be. From what i’ve seen and heard, a dilemma for some is that not everyone, and not every corporation understands how to fully use this resource. No one has really written a how-to, a “don’t do this”, and/or a curriculum of Social Media. With this part of the media world rapidly developing, would majoring in Social Media or the closest thing to it, be a wise idea? (my current major is journalism/mass communications)
or…do you think that it could be a major risk? the type of path that will either pay out quite well, or turn out to be a dead end in less than ten years?

How much are we as programmers expected to know about marketing tools such as Social Media and Google Adwords?
I feel like people at my company really don’t understand my job. I’m the Software Developer and Analyst here – I build our websites and databases. It gets really frustrating when people come up to me and ask me to come up with Marketing Strategies for Social Media Networking.. I have explained to them again and again that they need to consult with a Marketing Expert regarding these tools but no one listens and they continue to ask me about it.
Yesterday one of our Account Managers came up to me and asked me how to present Google Adwords to her clients… I have actually never worked with Google Adwords before, I’m not even sure what I am supposed to do for it from a programming perspective, but I thought that this was more a marketing job, not a programmer’s job.
Am I wrong to think this? I mean I have built many Social Media Widgets, implemented things such as Omniture, but I have never come up with marketing strategies. At every other company I have worked for they had their own specialists that dealt with all of that. I have been at this company for a few months now, and it’s really frustrating that they don’t know anything about this stuff and they come to me for it…
How much are we expected to know about this as Software Developers? And how can I handle it when they approach me about these things?

It all depends on you. Besides being a Programmer I like to explore and experiment new things online and offline. Handling these kind of people is simple and again is upto you. If I was there in place of you, I would tell them what I know and what I don’t know.
